The State of the WIT Address
We’re not going to make any excuses. We’re going to tell it like it is. Straight forward with a shot of ethanol as the chaser.
WIT has grown above and beyond what we ever thought it would back when we started planning our very first tweetup in 2009. We’ve been through a lot of ups and even a few downs, all in the name of providing unforgettable INDYCAR fan experiences. We’ve met so many great people that each tweetup is kinda like a family reunion. Each time, we dream bigger and bigger, trying to create an event even more amazing than the last…it’s just that, this year, life came by and smacked us in the face.
Not to toot our own horns or anything, but MAN, did we have some great ideas this year. But when you combine some rather unique, unexpected planning challenges with the warp speed happenings of the rest of our lives (didja hear we were both in a certain WIT-related wedding in October?), we started to think about the humble beginnings of WIT.
WIT 2009: we didn’t have a website, we didn’t even have @WinterIndyTwtup, we just had a little weekend plan…and a LOT of fun.
While we are really pretty upset that this year’s WIT isn’t going to be on the grandiose scale of what we’d originally planned, we thought: maybe WIT is best going back to its grassroots feel. See, just because we aren’t having the big, fancy kickoff party doesn’t mean that we don’t have a whole buncha cool prizes to give away. And, come on, we don’t want to be DIMWITs either! (DIMWIT = “Damn, I Missed Winter Indy Tweetup”)
Does that mean there isn’t a place for the epic ideas we’ve got spinning around in our brains? Hell no. We’re constantly formulating plans and ideas on how to take social media + INDYCAR + an awesome fan base + thousands of potential new fans to unprecedented levels. And YOU’LL be in the front row when it all goes down.
For instance, you may or may not know that we each started a business – @happyfish103 started Maraschino Events (event planning) and @the_race_gIRL started 242MPH (motorsports marketing & PR). And we’re lucky enough to be officially collaborating on a special event for a great cause – Racing For Cancer’s big annual Indy 500 fundraiser (known last year as the #BeatCancer Bash), with a lineup even bigger and better this time around.
So, finally, about WIT 3.0: we’re leaving it up to you… if you’re still interested in attending a one-day event on Saturday, February 25, 2012, to have fun and socialize, leave a comment below or tweet to us at @WinterIndyTwtup. If there’s enough interest, we’ll fill the day with some fun activities.
Thank you for sticking with us for the past two years, and for understanding our new goals and the ever-changing life of “freelance” INDYCAR tweetup planners.
So… February 25. ARE YOU IN?
